Retaining Walls
When a site cannot hold the grades the design needs, a wall does the work. TerraTek builds retaining walls on commercial and energy sites across Texas — for general contractors and developers carrying sloped or constrained parcels, and for energy teams whose facilities have to sit level on ground that is not. In the raw-land-to-build-ready sequence, walls come early: they are built to the engineer's stamped design as grading establishes the elevations on either side, because the pads, roads, and drainage above and below a wall cannot be finished until the wall is standing. We build the wall, the drainage behind it, and the backfill that makes it permanent.
Why Retaining Walls Set Up Everything That Follows
On commercial and energy sites, a retaining wall is not landscaping — it is part of the structural system. It lets a constrained site carry two elevations at once: parking above and drainage below, a pad here and a road there, a level equipment yard cut into a hillside. Every scope adjacent to the wall inherits its schedule. The upper pad cannot be finished until the wall can take backfill; the lower road cannot be built until the wall face is clear; the drainage plan assumes the grade separation the wall creates. A wall that starts late, or fails inspection mid-construction, holds all of it hostage.
Texas ground raises the stakes. Expansive clays do not just push down on a foundation — they push sideways on a wall, and they push harder when wet. That is why wall performance is decided mostly where nobody can see it: in the foundation preparation, the reinforcement zone, the select backfill compacted in controlled lifts, and above all the drainage that keeps water from building pressure behind the face. Most wall failures are water failures first. Building the wall inside the civil sequence — with the same crews running the mass grading, so wall backfill and site fill rise together and the wall's drainage ties into the site's — is how a wall gets built once and then ignored for decades, which is the only kind of attention a retaining wall should ever get.

Grade-separation walls
Walls that let a constrained site carry two elevations — parking above, drainage below; pad here, road there; a level yard cut into sloping ground. On tight urban parcels and hillside sites, the wall is often what makes the site plan possible at all: without it, the slope between elevations consumes the very square footage the development needs. We build these walls to the civil and wall design drawings, coordinated with the grading on both sides of the face.
Structural walls built to the stamped design
Engineered walls constructed exactly to the wall design in the plan set — the specified system, embedment depth, reinforcement lengths and spacing, and backfill zones. Whether the design calls for a gravity system, a reinforced-soil wall, or a structural concrete section, the drawings and specifications govern every dimension. Our discipline is fidelity: reinforcement placed at the elevations shown, connections made per the manufacturer and the design, and no field substitutions without the engineer's direction.
Wall drainage systems
The drainage behind the wall — where most wall failures actually start — built as carefully as the face everyone sees. Free-draining aggregate zones, collection pipe at the heel, outlets that actually daylight, and filter separation that keeps fines from plugging the system over time. Hydrostatic pressure is the load walls are least often designed to carry, so the design keeps water from accumulating — and we build that part of the design with particular care, then tie it into the site's drainage system.
Wall excavation & select backfill
Wall excavation cut to the neat lines the design requires, foundation soils prepared and proof-rolled, and select backfill placed in controlled lifts compacted to specification — with the lighter compaction equipment the zone nearest the face demands, so compaction itself does not load the wall. Backfill is the slowest part of wall construction done right, and the most common corner cut when it is done wrong. We schedule for the lifts the specification requires.
Coordination with grading, structures & sitework
Walls rarely stand alone: they meet building pads at the top, roads at the bottom, and concrete structures — footings, stairs, barriers — along their run. We sequence wall construction so backfill lifts rise with adjacent site fill, penetrations for utilities are sleeved where the plans show them, and the scopes above and below the wall arrive to grades that are ready for them.
How It Connects to the Rest of the Civil Package
A retaining wall is the hinge between two halves of a site plan, so its handoffs run in every direction. Wall cuts and foundation preparation draw on our excavation scope, and wall backfill rises with the site fill our earthwork crews are placing on the same schedule. The wall's internal drainage discharges into the systems built under erosion and drainage control, upper grades finish out as pad construction, and lower grades often carry roads the wall was built to protect. On basin and channel edges, wall work meets pond construction. When the wall is one line item inside a larger grading and sitework problem, turnkey site development puts the whole sequence — wall included — under one contract.
Retaining Walls FAQ
Does our site actually need a wall, or can the grade be resolved with slopes?
A slope is almost always cheaper than a wall — when the site has room for it. Slopes consume horizontal distance, and how much depends on soil and stability requirements. When the site plan cannot give up that footprint — building against a property line, parking counts that will not flex, a drainage easement below — a wall buys the space back. The choice belongs to the civil engineer, and it is made early because it moves grading quantities, drainage, and cost all at once. If you are still in planning, send the grading concept; the wall-versus-slope trade is exactly the kind of question worth settling before the design hardens.
Why do backfill and drainage matter more than the wall face?
Because the face carries the load last. In a reinforced-soil wall, the compacted backfill and reinforcement zone are the structure — the visible face is largely a facing. In any wall type, water is the enemy: saturated backfill weighs more, pushes harder, and adds hydrostatic pressure most designs assume the drainage system will prevent. So the quality variables that decide a wall's life are invisible on day one — lift thickness, compaction density, drainage aggregate, outlet function, filter separation. A wall can look perfect the day it is finished and already be failing behind the face. That is why we treat backfill and drainage as the wall, not as accessories to it.
Who engineers the wall, and who inspects it?
Walls that require engineering are designed by a licensed engineer — typically the project's engineer of record or a wall design engineer working under them — and the design covers the system, embedment, reinforcement, drainage, and global stability. Construction-phase verification follows the project's requirements: the owner's testing laboratory verifies backfill densities lift by lift, and the engineer performs whatever inspections the design and jurisdiction require. TerraTek builds to the stamped design and coordinates those verification points into the schedule rather than around them. Engineering judgment stays with the engineer; execution stays with us. That division is stated plainly in our scope note below, and it is how we bid every wall.
Can TerraTek build a wall as a standalone scope?
Yes — general contractors sometimes carry a wall as its own package, and we price it that way: excavation, foundation preparation, the wall system per the stamped design, drainage, and select backfill, with densities verified by the owner's lab. The caution we offer is about seams: a standalone wall contractor depends on someone else's grading for foundation elevations and someone else's schedule for backfill windows. When our crews hold the grading and the wall together, those seams disappear — backfill rises with site fill and the wall never waits on a grade. That bundled approach is part of turnkey site development.
What should we send to get a wall priced?
The wall plan and profile, the typical sections and details, the geotechnical report, and the grading plan for the ground on both sides of the wall — the wall cannot be priced apart from what it retains and what sits below it. We respond with a scope letter covering sequencing against the site grading, backfill material sourcing assumptions, drainage inclusions, verification coordination, and stated exclusions. If the wall design is still in progress, we can price budget-level from the civil grading plan and firm up when the stamped design issues.
Scope & Responsibility
Walls that require engineering are designed by a licensed engineer and built by TerraTek to the stamped design. TerraTek constructs retaining walls; wall engineering, global-stability analysis, and any required inspections remain with the project's engineer of record. Where a scope calls for work we do not self-perform, we coordinate qualified subcontractors under our contract and say so plainly during bidding.
