Not every yard of dirt on a site moves the same way. Why Excavation Sets Up Everything That Follows
Excavation is where the subsurface stops being theoretical. Across the Edwards Plateau and much of Central Texas, limestone sits close to the surface and ranges from rippable, weathered rock to ledge that stops a bucket cold. Across the Permian Basin and West Texas, caliche shows up in cemented layers that read like soil on the boring log and dig like concrete in July. Two borings fifty feet apart can tell two different stories, which is why we read the geotechnical report for what it implies between the borings, not just what it states at them.

The stakes concentrate at the bottom of the hole. A footing excavation carried two tenths low is not a digging problem — it is a concrete quantity problem, because the lean concrete or engineered fill that corrects it costs more than the dirt did. Trenches deeper than five feet bring OSHA excavation requirements into play: sloping, benching, or shoring chosen against the actual soil classification, evaluated by a competent person, and re-evaluated after every rain. Spoil has to land where it will not surcharge a trench wall or block the next operation. And on energy sites — substations, compression stations, plant expansions — excavation often happens near live buried infrastructure, where locate discipline and careful exposure practices are the difference between a routine dig and an incident.

What Our Excavation Scope Includes
Bulk & site excavation
Large-volume excavation for below-grade structures, detention and retention basins, design cuts, and unsuitable-material removal — coordinated with the overall grading program so cut material moves to fill areas or stockpiles in one handling. We plan haul routes and spoil placement before opening the cut, and we track excavated quantities against plan so surprises show up in the daily reports, not the final pay application. Structural excavation
Footing, grade beam, pier cap, and foundation excavations held tight to line and grade, with over-dig controlled — every inch below plan bottom becomes extra concrete or engineered fill. Bottoms are cleaned, protected from water, and presented for the engineer to observe before anything covers them. We coordinate directly with the concrete operation — ours or yours — so excavation, inspection, and pour cycle without idle days between them. See commercial concrete construction.
Trenching & trench safety
Utility and drainage trenches cut to flowline grade, with sloping, benching, trench boxes, or shoring matched to depth and soil classification and a competent person evaluating protective systems daily and after weather. Bedding, haunching, and backfill go back in controlled lifts so the trench does not become a soft streak through an otherwise verified subgrade. Rock excavation & ripping
Caliche and limestone handled with the right escalation: single-shank ripping where the rock is weathered, hydraulic hammering where it is not, and honest communication about which one the site is actually producing. We review boring logs and rock notes before pricing so rock is a defined line item with a clear classification basis — not a fight in the field. Rippable versus non-rippable is a cost question worth settling in the contract, and we treat it that way.
Spoil management, backfill & haul-off
Excavated material sorted for what it is: structural fill candidate, general fill, or waste. Suitable spoil is stockpiled for reuse where the specifications allow, unsuitable material is hauled off, and imported backfill is placed and compacted to the project specification. Stockpile locations are planned against site logistics so material is staged near where it returns to the ground — double-handling dirt is the quietest budget leak in sitework.
How It Connects to the Rest of the Civil Package
Excavation threads through the entire civil sequence rather than sitting at one point in it. It starts inside the earthwork program, where design cuts and unsuitable-material removal are part of reaching rough grade. It opens the trenches that underground utilities pipe and backfill, and the neat excavations that commercial concrete fills with footings and grade beams. It shapes detention and retention features under our pond construction scope, and cuts the keyways and benches behind retaining walls. Because each of those handoffs carries a survey tolerance and an inspection, excavation quality is measured by how little the following trade has to say about it. Excavation FAQ
Is excavation a separate scope from grading, or part of it?
They often travel together on paper, but they are different disciplines. Mass grading is about moving volume efficiently across a site; excavation is about opening specific, engineered holes to exact dimensions. Many projects buy them as one earthwork package, and we price them that way when the plans support it — but structural excavation, trench work, and rock removal carry their own production rates, equipment, and risk profiles, so we break them out as identifiable line items either way. If you only need the dig — a foundation package, a basin, a trench run — we bid excavation standalone. If you need the site shaped and the holes opened, one contract covers both and the sequencing conflicts disappear.
What happens when you hit rock, and how should rock be priced?
First, honestly. The geotechnical borings tell us where rock was encountered and how it tested; we price against those logs and state plainly what we assumed. Rippable rock runs through production as slower excavation. Non-rippable rock moves to hammering, which is a different cost per yard entirely. The contract should define the classification method and unit pricing before mobilization — the worst version of rock is the version negotiated after it is exposed. In Central and West Texas, assuming no rock is not optimism, it is a budgeting error; we would rather carry a realistic rock allowance you may not spend than a clean number you cannot finish on.
Who verifies the excavation is right before it gets covered up?
The design engineer sets the requirements — bottom elevations, bearing conditions, backfill materials, and compaction targets. Verification is third-party: your engineer or their representative observes footing bottoms and bearing surfaces, and an independent testing laboratory runs density tests on backfill lifts, reporting directly to your team. TerraTek executes to the specification and makes verification easy — bottoms cleaned and dry for observation, lifts held open for the technician, survey shots on flowlines and subgrades documented as we go. Nothing structural gets covered until the party responsible for accepting it has accepted it. That discipline costs hours in the moment and saves weeks over the life of the job.
Can you excavate on a site where another contractor holds the grading?
Yes. We regularly mobilize for defined excavation scopes — foundation digs, basin cuts, trench packages — on sites where grading, utilities, or paving belong to others. The keys are interface control: shared survey control, agreed spoil and stockpile locations, deconflicted haul routes, and documented handoff surfaces. The alternative is bundling: when TerraTek holds excavation together with earthwork, utilities, and concrete, those interfaces become internal coordination instead of contract boundaries. Both models work — bundled delivery through turnkey site development simply removes the seams where claims tend to grow.
What should we send to get an excavation bid?
Structural foundation plans and details, the civil set, and the geotechnical report with boring logs — the rock and groundwater notes matter as much as the soil classifications. Add utility plans if trenching is in scope, and tell us what happens to spoil: kept, placed, or hauled. From that we return a proposal with quantities, a defined rock approach, trench protection assumptions, and clear exclusions.
