What Wind & Solar Projects Demand From a Civil Contractor

Renewable construction is a production line, not a building site. Turbine erection and module installation move through the project in sequence — strings, phases, crane walks — and the civil contractor's job is to stay ahead of that sequence everywhere at once. A wind site may need a rolling front of roads and crane pads finished in erection order; a solar site needs grading, roads, and trenching released block by block so racking and stringing crews never idle. A civil contractor who works one front at a time becomes the project's pacing item within a month.

The sites themselves add the second layer of difficulty. Renewable projects sit on remote ranchland measured in sections, not acres: long hauls from the nearest materials source, water for compaction and dust control that has to be planned rather than assumed, and weather exposure across huge disturbed areas.

Then come the frameworks. EPC contracts push schedule risk downward, so civil subcontractors are held to milestone dates with real teeth. Crane paths and pads must meet the erection contractor's bearing and grade requirements, roads must carry loads far past county standards, and stormwater compliance across a footprint that size is a daily documentation discipline, not a sign at the gate. Access & Array Roads

Miles of road built to carry crane and component loads — often the largest civil quantity on a wind site. Alignment, geometry, and surfacing follow the transport and erection plan, and roads are maintained through the traffic that construction throws at them.

Crane Pads, Laydown & Turbine Foundation Support

Crane pads built to the erection contractor's bearing and level tolerances, laydown yards sized for component staging, and excavation, backfill, and grading support around turbine foundations built to the foundation engineer's design.

Site Grading & Earthwork

Solar-block grading held to the racking system's slope tolerances and wind-site grading across broken ranch terrain — cut and fill planned so haul distances, drainage, and disturbance limits all stay inside the project's constraints.

Collection Trenching & Conduit

Trenching, bedding, and backfill for collection circuits and communications runs at the depths and separations the electrical design requires — sequenced with the cable contractor so open trench never sits exposed longer than it must.

Do you work on wind projects, solar projects, or both?

Both, and the civil logic is more shared than different. Wind sites are road-and-pad projects: long access alignments, crane paths, and pads spread across ranch country. Solar sites are grading-and-trenching projects: large blocks held to racking tolerances with collection trenching threaded through them. TerraTek prices and plans either as a system of fronts keyed to your installation sequence — and hybrid projects that add storage yards or substation pads fold into the same package. What do crane paths and pads require beyond normal roads?

Bearing capacity and geometry that ordinary site roads never see. Crane walks and pads are designed around the erection contractor's equipment: ground bearing pressures, turning radii, grades held within tight tolerances, and compaction that proof-rolls clean under some of the heaviest wheeled and tracked loads in construction. We build to the erection plan's stated requirements, coordinate proof-rolls and density testing at the specified points, and maintain the surfaces through component deliveries — because a pad that was fine in April has to still be fine when the crane arrives in August.

Who engineers and tests turbine foundations and electrical systems?

Not us, and that boundary protects the project. Turbine foundations are designed by the foundation engineer and built and tested under the EPC's structural program; collection and substation electrical work belongs to the electrical contractor; geotechnical and materials testing sits with the project's independent testing firm. TerraTek delivers the civil scope around those elements — excavation and backfill support, pads, roads, grading, trenching, and drainage — built to the issued drawings and verified by the project's testing before anyone builds on top of it.
